Flamekeeper

Joey Daccord

He stopped all 35 Vegas shots for the shutout, so the Golden Knights never got a single goal on the board.

Daccord's 35 saves leave Vegas in the dark

Thirty-five shots, zero goals

Joey Daccord faced 35 shots from the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Park in Seattle and turned away every one of them. That is the whole night in one sentence, and it carried the Seattle Kraken into the final five. A quarterfinal loss meant going dark with the shelf nearly empty.

Vegas came in burning hot. The Golden Knights finished 5th of 32 last season, then snuffed the Ducks on qualification night and the Kings in the round of 16. The Kraken, 12th of 32 last season, had doused the Flames and the Canucks to get here. Neither club had any Gauntlet past to lean on, and they had never met in one before.

Tolvanen strikes first

Eeli Tolvanen struck at 04:50 of the first, tipping in a shot set up by Vince Dunn and Adam Larsson. That one held up as the winner. Then a defenseman got in on it. Will Borgen ripped a slap shot at 02:19 of the second, 17:29 after Tolvanen's goal, with Tye Kartye and Tolvanen assisting. Yanni Gourde finished it with an unassisted wrist shot at 02:10 of the third, 19:51 after Borgen scored.

The door stays shut

Logan Thompson made 24 saves on 27 shots for Vegas, but at the other end nothing got past Daccord. Larsson's interference penalty at 16:39 of the second gave the Golden Knights a power play, and they got nothing from it. Brayden McNabb went off for tripping at 12:10 of the third and Alex Pietrangelo for slashing at 19:54. The Golden Knights' flame went cold. Five still burn.

What is the Gauntlet?

A proposal for an NHL in-season tournament. All 32 teams start alive, every Gauntlet game is a game already on the regular-season schedule, and lose one and you are out.
