Schwartz strikes twice and Calgary's candle goes cold

Two rinks, one shelf

Qualification night sent the Seattle Kraken and the Calgary Flames to different rinks with the same thing on the line. Each team played its own game, and the one that scored more went through. The other's candle would go dark on night one. Seattle had finished 12th of 32 last season. Calgary had finished 16th.

In Calgary, Blake Coleman snapped one in at 1:15 of the 1st. The Flames never scored again. Igor Shesterkin stopped 25 of 26 shots, and the New York Rangers answered with power-play tip-ins from Alexis Lafrenière and Chris Kreider before defenseman Erik Gustafsson poked in a third at 16:53 of the 2nd.

Schwartz answers in Detroit

The Kraken fell behind at Little Caesars Arena when Joe Veleno's slap shot beat Joey Daccord at 1:07 of the 2nd. Jaden Schwartz tied it on the power play with a backhand at 5:16. Then he ripped a slap shot at 17:54. Two goals already, one more than Calgary would get all night. Tye Kartye's wrister at 19:04 made it 3-1.

Late fire, then overtime

The Detroit Red Wings came back with three power-play goals in the 3rd, from Shayne Gostisbehere, Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat, and led 4-3 at 10:26. Seattle pulled its goalie for an extra attacker, and Jared McCann tied it with a wrister at 18:38, with 1:22 left. Jordan Eberle snapped the winner 4:55 into overtime. Calgary's flame was snuffed, and 23 candles burn on.
