Fifteen minutes in, the Toronto Maple Leafs' candle was nearly gone. Brayden Point slapped home a power-play goal at 15:13 of the first, and the Tampa Bay Lightning led 4-1 in a Round of 16 game where the loser goes dark. Both clubs had already earned their place here: Tampa Bay doused the Hurricanes on qualification night, and Toronto snuffed the Capitals.

Matthew Knies opened the scoring with a wrist shot at 3:42. Victor Hedman, a defenseman, answered just 0:35 later. Then Nikita Kucherov took over: a snap shot at 6:11, a power-play slap shot at 11:27 and assists on Hedman's and Point's goals. That was four points in the first period.

Matthews starts the climb

Auston Matthews cut the lead in the second, with a snap shot at 2:22 and a backhand at 5:42. Mitch Marner assisted on both. Early in the third, the lead disappeared. Calle Jarnkrok snapped in the tying goal at 1:55, and Marner snapped Toronto ahead 0:08 later. Brandon Hagel's wrist shot at 17:34 tied it again and kept Tampa Bay alive. Toronto went through two goalies: Ilya Samsonov stopped 8 of 12, and Joseph Woll stopped 18 of 19.

Forty-six seconds

Overtime didn't last long. Morgan Rielly and William Nylander set it up, and Jarnkrok tipped it in 0:46 into extra time. Jonas Johansson had made 28 saves, but the Lightning's flame went cold. The Maple Leafs burn on, one of 13 candles still lit.
