Two Kraken casualties collide
Last Gauntlet, the Seattle Kraken ended both of these clubs. They snuffed the Calgary Flames on qualification night and later doused the Vegas Golden Knights in the quarterfinals. This season both came to T-Mobile Arena already holding a scalp: Calgary had blown out the Oilers' candle on qualification night, and Vegas had done the same to the Kings. In the Round of 16 the loser was finished. When the night ended, only 13 flames were left burning.
A defenseman strikes first
Alex Pietrangelo, a defenseman, opened the scoring at 6:39 of the first with a wrist shot, set up by Alexander Holtz and William Karlsson. That goal held up as the winner. Mark Stone made it two at 3:30 of the second, a slap shot off a feed from Jack Eichel. Justin Kirkland went off for cross checking and Kevin Bahl for an illegal check to the head, but the Golden Knights' next goal didn't come until the third.
Fifteen seconds of fire
Keegan Kolesar tipped in the third goal at 2:19 of the final period. Eichel took a tripping minor at 10:21 and Calgary got nothing from it. Kolesar struck again with a snap shot at 13:59. Then, just 0:15 later, Nicolas Roy buried a wrist shot with Kolesar and Cole Schwindt assisting.
Dan Vladar made 33 saves on 38 shots for Calgary. At the other end, Hill stopped all 16 shots he faced. The Flames went cold, and Vegas burns on.
What is the Gauntlet?
A proposal for an NHL in-season tournament. All 32 teams start alive, every Gauntlet game is a game already on the regular-season schedule, and lose one and you are out.
