Jarvis slap shot keeps Carolina burning in overtime
Same scar, one survivor
Both clubs came into Lenovo Center in Raleigh with the same wound. The Philadelphia Flyers had gone dark on qualification night in each of the last two Gauntlets, beaten by the Washington Capitals and then the New York Rangers. The Carolina Hurricanes had done the same, felled by the Ottawa Senators and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tonight one of them would finally reach a second round. The other would go cold on night one again. When it was over, 28 candles were still burning.
Trading leads in Raleigh
Philadelphia struck first. Owen Tippett ripped a power-play wrist shot at 19:38 of the first, with Travis Konecny and Trevor Zegras on the assists. Logan Stankoven answered with a snap shot 3:46 into the second. Bobby Brink snapped the Flyers back in front 2:32 later. Taylor Hall's backhand at 9:07 tied it again, and Jordan Staal's snap shot at 18:30 gave the Hurricanes their first lead.
Jarvis ends it
Samuel Ersson kept the Flyers in it, stopping 35 of 39 shots. Then a defenseman tied it. Travis Sanheim snapped one home at 16:00 of the third, 17:30 after Staal's goal, with Brink and Tyson Foerster assisting. Frederik Andersen stopped 20 of 23 at the other end.
Overtime lasted 4:43. Seth Jarvis loaded up a slap shot, Sebastian Aho and Shayne Gostisbehere drew the assists, and Philadelphia's candle was snuffed. The Hurricanes burn on.
What is the Gauntlet?
