Levi stands firm through 40 Kings shots
Outshot and still burning
On qualification night in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Kings fired 40 shots at the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers managed 17. It was still the Kings' candle that went dark. One Gauntlet loss ends a flame, and both clubs knew how that feels: the Kings had been snuffed on qualification night in each of the last two seasons, and the Oilers in two of the last three. Edmonton finished 14th of 32 last season and Los Angeles 20th. Only 16 flames were still burning when the night was over.
Sixty seconds, two goals
Leon Draisaitl opened the scoring at 7:16 of the first with a snap shot, set up by Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard. Drew Doughty went off for tripping at 7:44, and Vasily Podkolzin punished it on the power play at 8:16 with another snap shot from the same two passers, 1:00 after Draisaitl's goal. That one stood as the winner. At 15:48 McDavid finished one himself, a backhand set up by Ty Emberson and Jason Dickinson. Darcy Kuemper stopped four of the seven shots he faced. Anton Forsberg came in and stopped all nine he saw.
Levi holds the line
Devon Levi did the rest. He stopped 39 shots, and the only one that got past him came from Brandt Clarke, a defenseman, whose wrist shot at 17:29 of the second ended a 21:41 stretch without a goal. Scott Laughton and Trevor Moore assisted. Levi got through Owen Michaels' holding minor and McDavid's tripping call in the third. Podkolzin sealed it with a wrist shot into the empty net at 17:42 of the third. McDavid and Draisaitl assisted, and that gave McDavid his fourth point of the night. The Kings were doused. The Oilers burn on.
