Comeback Knights burn on past the Kings in a shootout

The Los Angeles Kings had the Vegas Golden Knights in trouble. Both clubs had survived qualification night, Vegas by snuffing the Ducks and Los Angeles by dousing the Coyotes. This was the Round of 16, and only one of these candles would stay lit. Fifteen flames burn on after this one.

At Crypto.com Arena, Alex Laferriere wristed in the opener at 13:11 of the first. Trevor Lewis made it 2-0 with a backhand at 4:54 of the second.

Vegas strikes back

Michael Amadio answered 2:42 later with a wrister off a William Karlsson feed. Nicolas Hague and Andreas Englund dropped the gloves at 9:54, and at 12:57 William Carrier snapped home the equalizer unassisted. Pierre-Luc Dubois took a holding-the-stick minor at 5:37 of the third, and 49 seconds later Mark Stone snapped in the power-play go-ahead, from Jonathan Marchessault and Shea Theodore.

The Kings had four minutes of power play on Ivan Barbashev's high-sticking double minor and came away with nothing. Then, with their net empty for an extra attacker, Drew Doughty slapped in the tying goal at 18:57, with 1:03 left in regulation.

Eichel seals it

Overtime settled nothing, not even with Phillip Danault off for tripping at 1:08. In the shootout Trevor Moore missed. Jack Eichel scored. Dubois, Theodore and Kevin Fiala all missed, and the Kings went dark. Outshot 40 to 30, Vegas leaned on Logan Thompson's 37 saves.
